Abstract:

Investigation of potentially effective measures to achieve balanced illumination of aircraft displays was conducted. The theory was advanced that the apparent brightness apparent luminance sensation is identical with the sensation of glare. Four classical approaches to glare were examined transformed for apparent luminance applications and equivalence criteria evaluated in the laboratory. Results indicate that the Fry revision of the scattering theory of glare provided a feasible solution which, with the use of the Pritchard Photometer equipped with integrating glare lens, can be adapted for display evaluation. It was recommended that further experimental study be implemented to establish firm corroboration and refine measurement techniques. Author
