Abstract:

Results of the theoretical work on the characteristics of the electrostatic analyzer and of advanced analysis of data from the satellite Hitch-hiker I are presented. Plans for future work are briefly outlined. As a continuation of the analysis of the Hitch-hiker I energetic electron data, a radiation belt model has been developed which is based on the simultaneous presence of two types of diffusion processes, one of which conserves the first adiabatic invariant while the other conserves the particle energy. A computer program has been developed, simulating the radiation belts under certain simplifying assumptions. Preliminary results approximate well the temporal and spatial patterns observed in the radiation belt. Analytical results have also been obtained, but their usefulness has so far been rather limited due to certain restrictive underlying assumptions. Author
