The horizontal components of an oscillating magnetic dipole immersed in a semi-infinite conducting medium were determined using the most general expressions available. The fields of interest were those beneath the surface of the conductor. An experiment was designed and performed to measure the y-component of the magnetic field created by a small y-oriented loop antenna located beneath the surface of a conducting half-space. The fields were measured beneath the surface of the same conducting half-space. The measured data was compared quantitatively to the results calculated from the theory. After examining the amount of quantitative uncertainty associated with the measured data, favorable quantitative agreement between measured and calculated results was found. Author
