Abstract:

The force constants of a series of nonmetal hexafluorides were calculated using a modified Urey-Bradley Force Field, and the results correlated according to the position of the central atom in the periodic table. On this basis, the recent vibrational assignment of IF6 by Christe and Sawodny was questioned it is suggested that the nu1 and nu2 assignments should be reversed, and that nu4 has not been properly identified.
