Abstract:

Using the alloy Ti-6Al-4V as a reference, the basic mechanisms in the solid state bonding of titanium alloys are being investigated. The following progress was made Rod and plate stock of Ti-6Al-4V alloy was purchased and received a supply of halogen-free cutting fluid was obtained. Initial use of this fluid indicates that it is effective in prolonging cutting tool life and reducing machining time the vacuum hot press was modified to obtain more uniform temperature and bonding pressure a series of specimens were bonded as part of an effort to better define the effects of time and surface finish on bond strength a study was initiated to determine the effectiveness of ultrasonic scanning as a means of non-destructive testing of bonded joints an examination of sample surfaces before and after cleaning was made using optical and electron microscopy. It was found that the cleaning process greatly changes the appearance of the surface. Author
