Abstract:
The buckling of a rectangular plate by a local load acting in the plane of the plate is analyzed. A load uniformly distributed along a small, but finite section of the edge is used instead of a concentrated load. The problem is treated as a linear one, and two methods are used in determining the buckling load which depends on the value of a buckling coefficient K 1 integration of the partial differential equation which describes the shape of the elastic surface at the instant of buckling by a finite-difference method and 2 the energy method. The values determined by method 1 are lower than the exact values, and the values determined by method 2 are higher than the exact values. The maximum difference between them is less than 2. Results of calculating a numerical example carried out on the Kiev electronic computer by both methods are given in tables. Author
