Abstract:

The heats of combustion of solid and liquid trinitromethane were determined in a polymicrocalorimeter, these amounting to 792.2 plus or minus 3.2 and 816.5 plus or minus 2.8 calgram, respectively. From this have been calculated the enthalpy of formation of solid nitroform at standard conditions as being -11.5 plus or minus 0.5 kcalmole, and for the liquid phase -7.9 plus or minus 0.4 kcalmole. From the relationship of the pressures of the saturated vapor over solid and over liquid trinitromethane the heat of sublimation was calculated as being 11.0 plus or minus 0.1 kcalmole, and the heat of fusion as being 7.8 plus or minus 0.1 kcalmole. The energy of dissociation of the C-H bond in trinitromethane was determined to be 100.5 plus or minus 3 kcalmole. Author
