Emission spectra were obtained of the rare earth ions both for the crystalline and solution states of compounds of europium and samarium with beta-diketones and with derivatives of salicyaldehyde, 2-hydroxynaphthaldehyde, picric acid, phenanthroline, and dipyridyl. The measurements of the duration of luminescence of the various complexes indicate that the process of transfer of energy does not materially increase the lifetime of the excited state of the ions of the rare earths. The difference in the durations of the excited states for the different complexes and salts is no greater than the variation found in going from one simple salt to another, and cannot be explained by the difference in radiationless deactivation within the lanthanide ion.
