Abstract:
A study of liquid dynamics was undertaken by means of absorption or scattering of recoilless emitted gamma-rays. The 46.5 keV transition in 183W with 60.0000026 eV line width is chosen. A complete Mossbauer absorption setup including a 0.5 ms constant acceleration velocity drive, time-mode registration and a GeLi-detector system was constructed. It was operated with excellent stability for transmission experiments. As all efforts to use WF6 as liquid tramission sample failed due to its unexpectedly low Debye-temperature, measurements on various other tungsten VI-halides were carried out. But eutectic mixtures of alkali-tungstates seem to offer better chances for the transmission experiment. For the scattering experiment development on a motor drive and a high speed loudspeaker drive was carried out. Operation up to 3 ms drive velocity can now be realized. Instead of a primary gamma-energy selection by a bent crystal spectrometer a very selective resonance detector system was chosen using a pill box-type proportional counter and a special electronic suppression device for high energy background.
