Abstract:

To build machines which are going to function intelligently we have first to understand the nature of an organism and the nature of value. These two notions have not yet been developed well enough implicit metaphysical presuppositions at the core of much of our thinking have stood in our way. These presuppositions have been made explicit and have been challenged and replaced in Whiteheads general cosmology. Unfortunately, Whiteheads theory awaits formalization. Its implications cannot be brought out systematically until it is formalized. The usual logical systems, such as the propositional and predicate calculi, are not suited to the formalization of Whiteheads metaphysics they carry with them metaphysical assumptions which are contrary to his thinking. To produce a formalization of Whiteheads theory we propose to use combinatory logic, which is somewhat more neutral, and in particular theory of functionality. Author
