The report treats the photodetection problem from the standpoint of quantum transport theory. Quantities such as the counting distribution are expressed in terms of n-electron correlation functions, which can be analyzed by perturbation methods. The correlation function formalism provides a natural framework for describing photoemission, and it appears to offer several advantages over the earlier theories. Its generality enables one to avoid many of the unnecessary restrictions present in these earlier theories. It can be applied to multi-photon ionization, or even to processes in which photons are emitted as well as absorbed e.g., Raman effect.
