Abstract:

A quantitative method suitable for measuring cardiac output in small animals is described. A modified version of a previously described catheter was designed and utilized in the present study. The chief modifications were dictated by the size of the animal, the type of temperature transducer used, and the diameter and length of the catheter. Based on thermodilution principles, cardiac output is directly proportional to the rate of heat introduced and inversely related to temperature rise. After reliable measurements were obtained using a circulation model, the catheter was evaluated in seven squirrel monkeys where reproducible results were obtained. The cardinal advantage of this method for rapid repeated measurements and the possibility of remote control are emphasized. Author
