Abstract:

The theory and design of a transient calorimeter for convective and radiant heating rate measurements are presented. The major sources of error are pointed out, including thermal gradients in the slug, heat losses, variable thermal properties, variable heat flux, and surface effects. It is shown that the NOL calorimeter can be depended on for an accuracy of about plus or minus 5. Experimental measurements in an oxyacetylene burner, arc image furnace, and arc wind tunnel are presented. The measured heat fluxes range from about 20 calsq cm sec 74 BTUsq. ft sec to 270 calsq cm sec 1000 BTUsq ft sec. In addition to the results for the NOL calorimeter, a general survey of work done by others is presented. Author
