Abstract:

Various theoretical analyses of the equilibrium compression between parallel plates of cylindrical specimens of plastic materials have been compared with the experimental behaviour of plastic propellants. Three theories have been shown to be inapplicable, but one, due to Meyerhof and Chaplin, agrees well with experiment. Thus, the fundamental rheological property of yield stress may now be derived from this simple test, independent of the dimensions of the specimen. It also has been shown that a particular propellant, RD 2428T2, strain-hardens linearly that is, the yield stress is a linear function of the strain over a wide range. Author
