Self-regulation of the nervous system by means of conditioned reflex reproduction of effector reactions advantageous for so-called compensatory reactions guarantees the conservation of an optimal regimen and adequate level of integration of higher nervous system activity in animals and, in particular, in man. The adequacy and economy of these mechanisms in most connections depends on the adaptive effectiveness of all psychic human activities. Therefore, the problem of improving and stabilizing the self-regulation of higher nervous activity is the basic physiological content of human psychohygiene and psychoprophylaxis. In the present work the possible physiological mechanisms for the self-regulation of higher nervous activity are examined in animals and in man, as well as the significance of disturbances of these mechanisms in the function of internal organs.
