Abstract:

A cyclohexanone extraction procedure was developed to isolate Re from seawater, and the Re concentration was determined by neutron activation analysis. The average Re concentration in four widely-spaced Pacific Ocean surface seawater samples was found to be 0.0084 microgramsliter plus or minus 17 percent. The amount of Re found in or on a brown kelp plant Macrocystisintegrifolia was 0.022 microgramsg freeze-dried plant. The Re in seawater was found to exist as an extractable species, probably the perrhenate ion. The half-life of 186Re was determined to be 89.5 plus or minus 0.2 hr. Author
