Catabolism of alginic acid and of its major subunit, mannuronic acid, by both marine and terrestrial microorganisms was studied. Microorganisms possessing these catabolic abilities were isolated from nature by elective culture techniques. All microorganisms studied degraded alginic acid via an eliminative pathway and not via hydrolytic cleavage. All microorganisms studied catabolized mannuronic via a pathway involving the reduction of this substance to mannonic acid by a NADP-linked dehydrogenase as the first step. Mannonic acid was dehydrated to 2-keto-3-deoxygluconic acid which in turn was phosphorylated and cleaved to triose phosphate and pyruvic acid. Author
