The influence of stress concentration on the fatigue behavior of mild cold drawn steel St 42 K was investigated. Axial fatigue tests were performed at room temperature with a frequency of about 10 and 2000 cpm with cylindrical smooth and circumferentially notched specimens notch root radius 1.0 mm and 3.5 mm in the endurance range N 14 to 10 to the 7th power load cycles. The mean stress was varied between compression and the nominal tensile strength. The HOOKIAN stress concentration factor was calculated to 1.7 and 2.7. The experimentally determined fatigue strength reduction factor ratio plain fatigue strength to notched fatigue strength at sigma sub m 0 and N 10 to the 7th power was 1.5 and 2.5. By application of NEUBERs notch stress theory an approximative precalculation method for the fatigue strength reduction factor is established. Author
