Abstract:

This paper is a progress report of an effort at Carnegie-Mellon University to determine how a large capacity core storage facility LCS can be used to reduce the demand paging overhead costs in the IBM System360 Time Sharing System TSS360 and in similar general purpose time-sharing systems. A discussion is presented of how the number of paging operations and the cost of each paging operation can be reduced by using LCS as both a swapping device and an extension of executable core. Two problems which arise are considered. A new algorithm for releasing core is presented and compared with two existing algorithms. Finally, results from a feasibility implementation of the ideas in a pre-release version of TSS360 are presented as a demonstration of the validity of using LCS to reduce paging overhead. Author
