Data obtained from a specially-instrumented U-2 aircraft have been used to relate clear-air turbulence with mountain wave structure, observed during two research flights in the stratosphere over the Sierra Nevada Mountains on 13 and 14 May, 1964. The several cases of severe turbulence encountered took place in regions immediately downstream of wave troughs, in area of decreased statis stability and slower wind speeds associated with the prevailing upwind tilt of the waves. An expression for the Richardson number is obtained which incorporates modifications imposed upon flow through stationary disturbances such as mountain waves.
