Abstract:

A Laplace transform method is applied to the problem of a semi-infinite homogeneous elastic circular cylinder which is free from stress on the curved boundary but has some form of prescribed displacements andor axially symmetric stresses on the plane face. The eigen-function expansion is constructed in a rigorous way and the conditions are derived which allow the stress function to exhibit a decaying form. Associated with this problem is the Principle of Saint-Venant and in the last section is presented a numerical value to the fundamental decay constant. Author
