Abstract:

A number of notched, 12-inch-wide, steel-plate specimens--some of them taken from ship plating that had fractured in service--were tested in tension on the TMB 600,000-lb testing machine. Temperatures were accurately controlled. The purpose was to extend, by use of wide, full-thickness specimens, the knowledge of brittle-to-ductile transition characteristics of steel plates. A 1-inch-wide by 12-inch-long by full-plate-thickness test specimen with edge notches was employed to predict transition temperatures.
