The present note describes a setup for recording the second derivative of the current vs. voltage characteristic of a passive electric bipole. From such a record small deviations from linearity i.e. Ohmic conduction can be measured with very high sensitivity. The second derivative is obtained by measuring, with a lock-in amplifier, the second harmonic content of the current through the bipole, when the latter is subjected to a sinusoidal voltage, accurately harmonic-free. The principle of the method is developed and the performance of the setup is demonstrated in a typical case. Author
