Abstract:

An equation is proposed relating the glass transition temperature TG of copolymers to the molecular structure in terms of the mole fractions of the various diad sequences of monomer units combined in the copolymer chains. The equation, which can account for the occurrence of a maximum or a minimum in plots of TG versus copolymer composition, is applied to eleven addition copolymer systems and found to give good agreement with the experimental data. Application of the equation to obtain homopolymer TGs by extrapolation is demonstrated.
