A survey by questionnaire was made of the problem of user services and extension services used in the dissemination of materials and information to a selected number of industrial libraries. The survey resulted in data concerning staff size professional-to-clerical ratio size of book, document, periodical, and microform collections library hours mechanized search systems in use library programs concerning microforms library publications individual selective dissemination of information programs in-house translation services periodical routing and clipping services photocopy services size of technical body served radius of geographic area served by libraries branch libraries in use other forms of library extension services in use and other data concerning the 41 responding libraries. It appears that special libraries have made some progress in serving individual users by utilizing computers, microforms, rapid transmission equipment and other recent technological developments. However, services in disseminating materials to individual users in the industrial research and development situation do not match, in effectiveness, the services of Government agencies in disseminating materials to special libraries.
