Abstract:

A small conical shock tube was designed for a simple, inexpensive experiment to determine the sufficiency of simulating only ambient pressure in laboratory investigations of high-altitude explosions. Pressure waves formed by the detonation of an equivalent 0.7-gm pentolite charge were monitored by the response of mechanical foil gages. The cone could be tested in a laboratory high-altitude simulation chamber, and the identical experiment could be taken aloft by rocket and tested at altitudes. Evaluation tests on the cone indicated an asymmetric shock wave that led to non-reproducible foil gage response. Test results are given and discussed, and alternative methods for problem solution are recommended. Author
