Abstract:

The main topic of the report is the historical development of the safety concept in aircraft design. The methods by which the prescribed degrees of safety in various national regulations have been arrived at are discussed and comparisons are made between the safety factors laid down in American, British, French and German airworthiness regulations. Other subjects dealt with are the relatively new statistical concept of safety, gust loads, fatigue, and cumulative damage in fatigue.
