Multiloop pilotvehicle analysis forms the foundation of a rational procedure for synthesizing manual controldisplay systems. The theory for manual control displays is applied to the instrument landing approach of a large subsonic jet transport and a methodical display design procedure is presented. Manual approach path and lateral position control are treated in multiloop dynamic analyses so as to select preferred variables for measurement and display. Analytically derived performance and pilot workload measures are compared with allowable norms. The example concludes with the prediction of two preferred display arrangements. The predicted arrangements are then compared with FAA Category II instrument panel arrangement selected by two airlines operating the example aircraft. The predictions are shown to be remarkably accurate. Author
