Abstract:

Several different screw designs were performance evaluated in 8-inch diameter cable jacketing extruders. The objective was to compare the performance of these screw designs in terms of output capacity and quality while extruding low density polyethylene. Instrumentation for these evaluations included infrared thermometry as a means of monitoring temperature fluctuations of the extruded cable jackets. Results of these evaluations confirmed the output performance of the compression relief design. Performance of both the long metering and slotted-ring screw designs was also significant in terms of uniformity and capacity. In addition, this study demonstrated the suitability of infrared thermometry for operational evaluation of an extruder system. Author
