Abstract:

An effort has been made to improve forecasts of visibility near sunrise at Pittsburgh. A correlation of several parameters with the later occurrence of low visibilities less than three miles was attempted. The only significant correlation noted was that between visibility and wind speed as measured about four hours before sunrise. A graph showing occasions when low visibility should be forecast is presented. Using this graph the test of a years independent data gave a skill score of 0.52 with 84 correct forecasts. Author
