The method of characteristics was applied to compute the flow properties of the wave reflected from the open end of a conical shock tube. It was found that the resultant rarefaction wave is followed by a compression wave sufficiently strong to form a shock wave which travels back up the shock tube. The details of the rarefaction process were determined and the locus of the shock was plotted in the time-distance plane. The shocks strength and the properties of the subsequent flow were computed.
