The performance characteristics were established for a state of the art H3PO4 matrix fuel cell developed for operation with steam reformate 3 CO and air. The testing demonstrated the compatibility of the presently used cell components over long periods of time in the 160-190C temperature range. Initial power densities of about 60 Wsq. ft. at .70 volt terminal voltage using a total platinum loading of 11.5 gsq. ft. Significant performance degradation was observed, however, particularly in the first 300-400 hours under cell operating conditions. This performance decay was traced to two major factors, namely, recrystallization of the cathode catalyst, and marked increase in matrix electrolyte resistance. No evidence was found for a performance degradation related to porosity changes in the porous metallized teflon used as an electrode substrate or in the catalyst layer itself.
