Abstract:

In 1961 a number of studies were made dealing with the vertical distribution and migration of some of the copepods inhabiting the Indian Ocean. On the basis of data obtained by the 33rd cruise of the Vityaz we studied the migrations of copepods and euphausiids in the northern part of the Indian Ocean Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea. In order to study the vertical distribution of zooplankton, 3 to 5 series of samples were taken daily at 5 diurnal stations. In addition, we sampled the plankton during the day 0700-1700 and night 2100-0400 at a number of stations. About 30 major species of copepods and all the species of euphausiids found in the samples were accounted for. This material enabled us to divide all the copepods of the investigated area into groups based on their vertical distribution. Author
