Two techniques for the determination of post mixer spectra of FM distance measuring systems are presented and discussed 1 For periodic frequency modulation the post mixer signal is modeled explicitly on a digital computer and the spectrum computed using a fast and accurate better than 1 Fourier transform technique and averaging in the frequency domain 2 An analytic approach was developed, using the method of conditional expectations, for the determination of the covariance function of the post mixer signal which should be particularly useful for some types of non-Gaussian random modulation. To provide a check on the formal methodology the analytical approach was specialized to the case of periodic symmetrical linear sweep FM and the resulting spectra compared to those obtained using the independently developed computer programs.
