The report furnishes the observation and analysis of the pressure shift of 130 emission lines of metal atoms in the region 2947-5900A produced by various relative densities of argon and helium by means of a ballistic compressor. Eighty of these lines belonged to FeI the remainder were due to CrI, CuI, MnI, NiI, NaI, CaI and CaII. The temperatures of compressed gases were 3230K r.d. varied from 28-104 for argon, and 3600K r.d. ranged from 36-108 for helium. Observations were also made on the shift of metal lines at various temperatures under a constant r.d. of argon. A comparison of the relative displacement of iron levels which differed in only one of the following their j-value, L-value, multiplicity, or electron configuration suggested four general statements.
