Abstract:

The report relates to a flame retardant crosslinked polyethylene which was recently developed for use in insulating and jacketing electric wires and cables. It is widely known that by merely adding crosslinking agent to a conventional flame retardant polyethylene compound, several desirable properties cannot be attainable. Therefore, studies have been carried out on additives for fully effecting crosslink reaction, and additives for improving flame retardancy of the product. The new compound obtained through these studies not only possesses an excellent flame retardancy, which is evaluated in accordance with ASTM D-635 to be self-extinguishing or non-burning, but it also has a high degree of crosslinking and outstanding electric characteristics. Apparatus lead wires, drop wires and power cables insulated with this new compound have passed the Vertical Flame Test by the UL method. The new compound is shown to have many outstanding practical properties. Author
