Abstract:

A study was made of the ion-exchange distributions of Co60, La140, Ce141, and Eu152-154 between Nova Scotia chabazite a zeolite and molten NaNO3 at 330C. The nitrates of cobalt and cerium were found to decompose at this temperature and their respective oxides were precipitated. Lanthanum and europium apparently replaced aluminum in the alumino-silicate framework of the chabazite. The presence of an inflection in the adsorption curve for europium was attributed to a lattice rearrangement in the chabazite. The analyses of several lots of natural chabazite showed that the exchangeable ions are primarily Ca, Na, and K. By repeated equilibrations in molten NaNO3 the natural chabazite was converted to sodium chabazite. Enhanced distribution coefficients and reduced hysteresis effects were obtained when Na22, Cs137, and Ba133 were equilibrated in a sodium chabazite-molten NaNO3 system as compared to the natural chabazite-molten NaNO3 system. A similar increase in the distribution coefficient was observed for Na22 in the lithium chabazite-molten LiNO3 system. Distribution coefficients were obtained also for Ag110m in the sodium chabazite-molten NaNO3 and lithium chabazite-molten LiNO3 systems. The position of Ag110m in the selectivity sequences for these systems was that predicted on the basis of ion size and ion charge. Author
