Abstract:

The paper deals with the problem of determining the optimum shape of a supersonic wing with given aerodynamic characteristics lift, total drag, liftdrag ratio, etc. which minimizes the average heat-transfer coefficient. The problem is reduced to determining the function y yx of the characteristic line of a thin profile which ensures the extremum of the functional of the average heat-transfer coefficient at given values of drag coefficients. This isoperimetric variational problem is solved by using indeterminate Lagrange multipliers. The solution is presented for the case when lift and drag are given, from which the solutions of other particular problems may be obtained. It is assumed that the lower and upper surfaces of the thin profile are thermally insulated from each other and that the boundary layer is totally laminar or totally turbulent. The local heat-transfer coefficients on a slightly cambered profile were determined by substituting the local flow parameters in the formulas obtained for an isothermal plate at zero angle of attack.
