The Air Force Weapons Laboratory initiated a study to investigate the efficiency of various types of devices and methods used to splice steel reinforcing bars. Since the Waterways Experiment Station was in the process of installing and evaluating the 500- and 200-kip loaders, a request was made for WES to determine what strain rates could be applied by the 500-kip loader. Several No. 18 bars and No. 9 bars were tested to failure. When operating the 500-kip loader at its maximum rate of strain, rates of approximately 0.020 in. in.sec were produced.
