The report presents the various designs and uses of slot couplers and the experimental data which have been obtained. The general construction of the slot hybrid coupler consists of a common slot between two waveguides which may be placed with either their narrow or wide sides adjacent. The width of the slot controls the amount of coupling between the two guides, and the length of the slot controls not only the coupling, but the amount of directivity and frequency of best operation. The slot hybrid coupler enjoys some advantages over other types of hybrid junctions. The mechanical construction is considerably simpler than that of the rat race or the magic T. The tolerances required in its construction are, in general, much easier to obtain than are those for any of the other varieties. It is also capable of excellent bandwidth since, being inherently matched over its normal operating frequencies, no matching irises or stubs are necessary. Probably the most important of its advantages is its mechanical configuration, which allows it to be incorporated in waveguide circuitry with a minimum of bends and twists and with very short guide lengths. Its power-handling capabilities are apparently intermediate between the magic T and the rat race.
