SIMULTANEOUS DUST AND OZONE SOUNDINGS OVER NORTH AND CENTRAL AMERICA.

Simultaneous soundings of ozone and sub-micron dust over North and Central America are reported. The results show considerably more dust in the equatorial stratosphere than in the middle latitude stratosphere. The relative maximum in the dust concentration observed near the level of the tropical tropopause and as far north as 60 degree is attributed to an equatorial dust source. The occasional appearance of a secondary dust maximum immediately above the mid-latitude tropopause is attributed to a form of transport other than that of eddy diffusion. The structure in the ozone and dust profiles appears to be highly correlated in the lower mid-latitude stratosphere. A quantitative model is presented describing the production and transport of dust in the stratosphere. Author
