An experimental study, largely using simple inorganic electrochemical models, of structural and electrical characteristics which lead, through the agency of electrical fields, to intercellular transmission of excitation or information and to intrinsic oscillations both sub- and suprathreshold in dense arrays of both biological neurones and neuron-like data-processing elements as now being developed. Such periodic phenomena are presumed to have both physiological and pathological significance in normal and abnormal brain function, but are, as yet, only little understood. Author
