The advantages of periodic mechanical removal of steam condensate from a condensing surface have been examined experimentally and theoretically, using the theory of Sparrow and Siegel. High time average condensing heat transfer coefficients, hc 5000 Btu per hr sq ft deg F, have been obtained at high heat loadings, Phi 94,000 Btu per hr sq ft. Prediction of this augmentation, achieved with conventional windshield wiper blades, compares favorably with the measured results. Applications of this principle will require a new concept in condenser configuration, perhaps similar to the hollow cylindrical model used in this study. A design study is being made for a specific shipboard application. Author
