Abstract:

The communications services available to a user remotely accessing a time-shared computer system are considered in light of the requirements of such usage. While time-shared systems are designed to provide the computer user with the opportunity to work at his most advantageous speed and interact with the computer at his convenience, available communications services have not as yet been designed for efficient and economic time-sharing computer usage. A plan is suggested which would share communication facilities among many users each user accessing the facility for brief periods of time. Although present technology would allow a group of users to construct a shared-carrier operation by leasing conventional circuits from the common carriers, it is suggested that the common carriers offer a sharing service, charging for communications by the amount of information transmitted rather than the time the circuit is open. Unless such a system is implemented, the full economic advantages of time-sharing cannot be attained. Author
