Abstract:

A description of Japans rapidly expanding civilian nuclear program. Despite a late start, the Japanese appear determined to build a substantial and, insofar as possible, a self-sufficient nuclear economy. The 1967 Long Range Program submitted to the Government by the Japan Atomic Energy Commission calls for an installed nuclear electric generating capacity of about 6000 Mwe by 1975 and 30,000 to 40,000 Mwe by 1985. It is estimated that Japan will have produced about 3 tons of plutonium by 1975 and about 35 tons by 1985. The Long Range Program places special emphasis on the development of advanced power reactors, especially the fast breeder. Author
