When crystals of KCl containing KSH are irradiated with X-rays at room temperature a prominent U-band develops, thus confirming the reaction SH- to H- S-i where H- denotes a hydride ion on a normal lattice site and S-i an interstitial S atom. Photolysis with u.v. light at 10K results in the above reaction and also in the reaction SH- to H-i S-. Thus excited SH- ions can break up in either of two ways, neither of which requires much thermal energy. Author
