An extension of the Kuhn-Grun theory of birefringence of ideal rubbers is carried out where a distribution of statistical segment lengths is permitted. It is shown that at a given elongation, longer statistical segments will be oriented more highly than shorter ones. The application of the model to the dichroism of rubber-like networks is discussed. It is shown that the dichroism measurement may give a different measure of orientation than birefringence since it may arise from certain segments of the chain which are of different length from those contributing to birefringence.
