The failure modes of fatigue and scoring in highly loaded contacts are analyzed. Existing theories by which their onset may be predicted are critically examined, and the relationship between these failure modes and the phenomenon of elastohydrodynamic lubrication is shown. The possible modifying influence of microelastohydrodynamic occurrences is pointed out and a method of analyzing such occurrences is proposed. The protecting influence of boundary lubrication effects is also demonstrated, and mechanisms for satisfactory performance and failure under the influence of this phenomenon are put forward. Author
