The experimental and theoretical investigations were concerned with 1 the fabrication of semiconductor films for the detection of small magnetic fields by means of the Hall effect, 2 the investigation of magnetic flux concentrators to be used in conjunction with such Hall elements, and 3 the development of a hand-carried battery-operated magnetometer based on this effect. Of the four complete magnetometers that were constructed and tested in the laboratory, two were delivered to ARPA. These magnetometers may be used to detect and measure magnetic fields as small as 10 to the -5 power oe in spite of large magnetic field gradients and in spite of the large bias provided by the earths magnetic field.
