The development of the concept of the liquid and solid states of large-particle macromeritic systems is traced briefly, and the consequences with respect to the shear resistance of such systems are pointed out. Subsequently, insights gained by the macromeritic systems theory and practical applications are treated with special reference to 1 liquefaction of loose natural sand strata by earthquake shock energy, 2 optimization of strength and permeability of granular drainage structures, 3 stabilization of granular soil systems, 4 granular backfill materials for special purposes, 5 Bearing capacity of granular systems, 6 consideration of porosity, internal surface and capillary phenomena in graded granular systems. The report concludes with a synoptic picture of the present state of knowledge on the structure and properties at different bulk densities of a macromeritic monocomponent system of essentially spherical particle shape.
